MSFC Update - May 2005

The 2005 MSFC Annual Meeting

The 12th MSFC Annual Meeting, “Paths to Abortion Practice: Patient Care Issues in Reproductive Health,” was held on March 5-6, 2005, in Philadelphia, PA. Sessions covered such diverse topics as the impact of U.S. policies on women’s policies worldwide, an osteopathic approach to ease postabortion pain, applying to residency programs as a prochoice student, and counseling interventions in the presence of an unexpected fetal diagnosis. For the first time this year, we included an advanced track aimed at 3rd- and 4th-year medical students and residents. We also had a clinical track covering medical and surgical abortion techniques.

A record-breaking 453 students representing 77 schools attended the conference! On their conference evaluations, participants reported that they gained knowledge, inspiration and ideas to take back to their schools and residency programs. Many participants commented that it was particularly valuable to meet role models who inspired them to continue their commitment to reproductive freedom.

One interesting result of the conference is that based on pre-conference and post-conference evaluations, there was a 15% increase in the percentage of participants who say they will provide abortion services in their future practice. This increase proves that the Annual Meeting is an important part of ensuring that reproductive choice will remain real for women!

MSFC Poster Presentation

This year the Annual Meeting included our 2nd annual poster presentation session. The posters were authored and presented by medical students, residents and pre-med students, and were judged on novelty of subject, clarity, and depth of discussion.
This year’s winners are:
