REGION 4 REGIONAL CONFERENCE

The MSFC Region 4 Conference, “Keeping ALL Your Options Open,” took place Saturday, October 8, 2005 at the University of Iowa. The day began with a talk by Karen Kubby, Executive Director of the Emma Goldman Clinic in Iowa City. Her talk, entitled “Keeping the Option Open for Everyone,” focused on patient resources and ways to ensure access to reproductive healthcare for our patients. The highlight of the conference was a discussion of how underage sex laws are used as a tactic for harassing reproductive healthcare providers by Simon Heller, a lawyer from the Center for Reproductive Rights who worked on Steinberg v. Carhart (2000), the Supreme Court decision striking down Nebraska’s “partial birth abortion” ban. The day concluded with an empowering talk by Dr. Jill Vibhakar, co-plaintiff in Carhart v. Ashcroft (now v. Gonzalez) and faculty advisor for University of Iowa’s MSFC chapter.

REGION 5 REGIONAL CONFERENCE

The University of Illinois at Chicago hosted the Region 5 Conference on October 22, 2005. The theme of the conference was “The Morality of Choice: Reconciling Religion and Reproductive Freedom” and was well attended by students from 8 different colleges and universities. Rev. Larry Greenfield, a Baptist minister and theologian in residence for Protestants for the Common Good, was the opening keynote speaker. Debra Stulberg, MD, spoke about the effects of Catholic hospital mergers on reproductive health care. David Nolan, the Director of Research and Writing at Catholics for a Free Choice talked about the ethics of pro-choice Catholicism, followed by a legislative update on current threats to abortion practice in Illinois and across the country by Lorie Chaiten of the Illinois ACLU.

Two small group sessions gave students a chance to network and learn from one another. First, students explored their feelings about providing abortions in difficult ethical situations. In the afternoon, Ob/Gyn and Family Medicine doctors from the Chicago area led workshops training students how to insert IUDs, perform MVAs and surgical first trimester abortions. Rev. Mark Pawlowski, the Executive Director of Planned Parenthood of South Central Michigan, gave an inspirational talk about the support for reproductive rights in religion to wrap up the daylong event.
