Abortion is one of the most commonly performed medical procedures, yet 87% of counties in the U.S. have no abortion provider and access in Canada is severely restricted in most provinces and territories. Many medical schools are not promoting education in contraception, abortion, and other reproductive topics – students often spend more time learning about Viagra and hair replacement. Medical residents do not have the chance to learn to perform abortions because most hospitals do not provide abortion services. Is it any wonder that the number abortion providers decreased by 11% between 1996 and 2000? MSFC is working to decrease the abortion provider shortage by helping medical students improve reproductive curriculum at their schools and provide educational and leadership opportunities for medical students. We provide support to student leaders in hostile areas, helping them to establish student groups on campus and promote pro-choice events. Students can receive scholarships from MSFC to attend leadership and educational conferences, and even get first hand abortion training through MSFC’s Reproductive Health Externship program. Medical Students for Choice has partnered with the I Do Foundation – now you can earn donations for MSFC when someone purchases a gift from your wedding gift registry! Register your event with I Do Foundation and then create your registry with merchants like Williams-Sonoma, Crate and Barrel, Target, and Macy’s. To select MSFC as the recipient of donations earned, log in to your I Do Foundation account and choose ‘Select Charities’. Click ‘Suggest a Nonprofit’ and type in the requested information: Medical Students for Choice You will then be able to select MSFC as your designated charity!
Host a house party Host a gathering in your community to raise awareness and funds for reproductive choice and quality medical education! A house party is something anyone can do – and it really helps promote MSFC’s work with medical education. The goal is simple: educate people about the lack of comprehensive reproductive medical education, what MSFC is doing to combat the problem, and raise funds to continue and improve our programs. Whether you host a potluck, film screening, or cocktail party, you can share with friends, family and co-workers how they can partner with MSFC to fight the abortion provider shortage and support quality medical education for their future doctors. MSFC’s national office will provide planning support and help match you up with a medical student or abortion provider in your area who might be willing to speak at your event. Have questions? Donate stocks and securities Gifts of long-term, appreciated assets are a wonderful way to support Medical Students for Choice’s work! The tax benefits are clear, but there is real satisfaction in knowing your support helps increase access to quality medical education and increases the number of abortion providers in the U.S. and Canada. Honorary or memorial donations Do you admire someone for standing up for what they believe in? Now you can tell them and/or their family members that their influence has been important in your life: make a gift in honor of someone special or give a gift to honor someone’s memory.
